Safe Toilets & Clean Water Project Completed
Bakau Primary School
We are delighted to announce the successful completion of our Safe Toilets & Clean Water Project at the school. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, pupils and staff now have access to clean, safe, gender-separated toilet facilities and a reliable supply of clean water. This transformation has created a healthier, safer, and more dignified learning environment for everyone at the school. The new facilities replace inadequate and overcrowded sanitation provision, ensuring that hundreds of children can attend school with greater comfort and confidence. Access to clean water and improved hygiene facilities will help reduce the spread of illness, improve attendance, and support pupils in reaching their full potential.

Windows, Flooring & Classrooms
Bakau Primary School
Classrooms currently have no windows — children learn in sweltering heat with no protection from the elements. Crumbling floors make the learning environment unsafe and uncomfortable.

Library, Resource Centre & Adult Literacy
Bakau Community
The final phase creates a library and resource centre for the school — and opens its doors to the wider community for adult literacy programmes, giving parents and community members the chance to learn alongside their children.

- A library transforms a school. Adult literacy opens doors for the whole community — parents who can read support children who can learn.

Healthcare support
Supporting the Bakau Healthcare Clinic
Alongside our work at the school, Shared Roots Gambia is committed to supporting the local healthcare clinic in Bakau. Access to basic healthcare is a fundamental right — and the clinic serves the whole community, from newborns to the elderly.
We are working with clinic staff and community leaders to identify the most pressing needs and develop a plan to provide meaningful, lasting support. Updates will be shared here as our plans develop.
