Our projects

Three phases of transformation

Every project we undertake is community-led, transparently funded, and designed to create lasting change for the children and families of Bakau.

Toilets, Water & Sanitation
Fundraising nowPhase 1

Toilets, Water & Sanitation

Bakau Primary School

Hundreds of children share broken, unusable toilet facilities. This phase will install clean, safe, gender-separated toilets and a reliable clean water supply — the most urgent need at the school.

Why it matters

Clean toilets and safe water protect children's health, keep girls in school, and restore dignity for every pupil and teacher.

  • Proper drainage and sanitation infrastructure

Windows, Flooring & Classrooms
Coming nextPhase 2

Windows, Flooring & Classrooms

Bakau Primary School

Classrooms currently have no windows — children learn in sweltering heat with no protection from the elements. Crumbling floors make the learning environment unsafe and uncomfortable.

Why it matters

Proper windows and flooring create a safe, comfortable space where children can focus on learning rather than enduring the conditions.

Fundraising begins after Phase 1 is complete

What we'll deliver

  • Window frames and shutters for all classrooms
  • Concrete flooring throughout the school
  • Structural repairs to classroom walls
  • Painting and finishing works
Library, Resource Centre & Adult Literacy
Future phasePhase 3

Library, Resource Centre & Adult Literacy

Bakau Community

The final phase creates a library and resource centre for the school — and opens its doors to the wider community for adult literacy programmes, giving parents and community members the chance to learn alongside their children.

Why it matters

A library transforms a school. Adult literacy opens doors for the whole community — parents who can read support children who can learn.

Fundraising begins after Phase 2 is complete

What we'll deliver

  • Purpose-built library and reading room
  • Books, resources and learning materials
  • Adult literacy programme space and equipment
  • Community resource centre open to all

Healthcare support

Supporting the Bakau Healthcare Clinic

Supporting the Bakau healthcare clinic

Alongside our work at the school, Shared Roots Gambia is committed to supporting the local healthcare clinic in Bakau. Access to basic healthcare is a fundamental right — and the clinic serves the whole community, from newborns to the elderly.

We are working with clinic staff and community leaders to identify the most pressing needs and develop a plan to provide meaningful, lasting support. Updates will be shared here as our plans develop.

Help us make it happen

Every phase starts with people like you. A donation of any size brings us closer to giving every child in Bakau a safe, inspiring place to learn.

Every pound you give goes directly to the children of Bakau.
