Our story
Two friends. One shared purpose.
Shared Roots Gambia was founded by Sarah Hanson and Claire Tope — two women with deep ties to the Bakau community who saw first-hand the challenges facing children at Bakau Primary School and families relying on the local healthcare clinic.
From crumbling toilet facilities to classrooms without windows, and a healthcare clinic in need of vital support — the needs are real and urgent. We established this Community Interest Company to channel the generosity of supporters in the UK directly into life-changing improvements for the whole Bakau community.
Every pound raised goes straight to Bakau. No overheads. No corporate structure. Just people helping people.

Replacing broken windows and improving classroom flooring to create a safe, weatherproof learning environment where children can focus and flourish.
Library, Resource Centre & Adult Literacy
Creating a library and resource centre for children, plus adult literacy classes for the wider community — building a culture of learning for all generations. The image above is the disused building that we will renovate.
